Four harness, counter-balance loom circa 1850. 04/14/2025

This loom is a museum quality loom, formerly owned by Ken Colwell/The Looms of Mineral Point WI. He acquired it at an estate sale in the Boscobel WI area. Ken thought it to be solid maple, and clearly of Scandinavian design. Iron of any kind was hard to come by in the statehood era, so its use in this loom is minimal. The cloth beam ratchet may be a “recycled” circular saw blade – the dog looks to be hand wrought.  The beater hangers too, look to be hand wrought.  Every other connection on the loom is hand crafted joinery. It comes with a heddle making jig Ken used to make the cotton heddles, currently on the loom. It’s got a metal reed, but also comes with a “reed” reed.  There are several other items that will come with the loom including: shuttles, electric yarn winder, scissors/tape measures, wooden raddle, some yarns, etc.I have other pictures. I have woven on this loom and it’s a dream to weave on!  Walking the treadles with a Crossley shuttle makes the warp fly through the loom! The loom is roughly 6′ in all dimensions.  The loom is in Platteville.  Cash only, no shipping. Contact sethne@uwplatt.edu
